Sgt Thomas Downton, 5239113 murdered 1920

Postby corisande » Sat Nov 12, 2011 8:23 pm

Strange tale this, a Sgt Pollington went off the rails in Dublin in 1920 and murdered two other sergeants, one of whom as was Sgt Thomas Downton 5239113 of 2nd Worcestershire Regt.

The details of the shooting at
www.cairogang.com/soldiers-killed/sween ... ngton.html

The Army seem to have brought in military censorship in the middle of Pollington's trial, and I could never find the verdict. Pollington certainly was about 5 years later and died many years later.

I wonder if any researchers or relatives of Sgt Downton have any more on this

Hi,
I did try the link but on my computer it comes up as "Page not available". I did look up Sgt. Downton out of interest and to see if I could add anything. Sad but true. His previous number was 9641. He embarked for France on 12th August 1914 with the 3rd Bn., right at start of the Great War. Survived all the Germans could throw at him and gets murdered by one of his own. He was wounded very early on. By October 1914 he was in hospital, wounded in England. He is listed on the Embarkation Roll in Worcester Cathedral.
