Grandfathers family

Postby Lucie » Sat Apr 26, 2008 7:57 pm

I have discovered several family members who enlisted with the Worcestershire regiment. Some, including the uncle to my Grandfather unfortunately died in service (Mesapotamia). I am firstly interested in completing my family tree details for my grandfather. I received a reply from the Ministry of Defence in 1990 which states the following but I should like the where? and why? to draw a picture of his service life - where did he go, what did he do?. I shall be grateful for any help in leaving a family record of this part of his life.

Enlisted into the Worcestershire Regiment at Winchester on a Short Service 29.12.19
Posted to 6th Battalion 02.01.1920
Posted to 2nd Bn 05.05.1920
Transferred to Section 'B' Army Reserve for a period of 1 year 30.10.24
Enrolled Section 'A' Army Reserve 22.06.1926
Discharged on termination of first period of engagement 28.12.1931
re-enlisted into the Buffs and posted to the 6th Home Defence Battalion Folkestone 15.02.1940
Service with the Colours: 29.12.1919 - 29.10.1924 and 15.02.1940 - 09.05.1941

With grateful thanks in anticipation :)

Hi Lucie,

You did not mention your grandfathers name or army number. This information may also help.

Hello :) - I am grateful and for your response. I give below the heading on the letter received from MOD in 1990:

"5242165 (formerly 74600) Private Albert William Bedwell - The Buffs"

He was born September 1901 the son of Florence Jane Bedwell of Bibury. I have no further details of his life until his Enlistment.

He met married my Grandmother in Dover where is was stationed in 1923 . I have found addresses for him in Folkestone and Whitstable (he remarried) and I have recently discovered that he emigrated to Australia on a free ex-serviceman's passage in July 1950.

Thanks again for any assistance - zero military knowledge but learning a lot on this forum :)

HiYa Lucie,

In reference to finding out about your grandfathers service. Try to get a copy of his service papers, if you look at my reply to the post for 33348 Pte Thomas Richard Hayes on the First World War section of this forum you will see some tips.

I use a professional researcher rather than do it myself, although you do pay it is probably more efficient and cheaper in the long run. His website is: ERROR://militaryresearchon.com/

Best Wishes

Hi Lucie,

From what you said earlier he joined the 2nd Battalion on the 5th May 1920. This was the time the 2nd Battalion were in Dublin where they stayed for the next 3 years. In January 1923 they returned to England and were then stationed at Dover.

Regimental Archives at Norton barracks may be able to help you with more information. Their contact details are on the Home Page of this website.

Louis

Hello Barrie :)

Many thanks for the information. All your leads and advice will keep me busy this coming week.

I agree that genealagists are good value, and use them frequently. Currently I have engaged one in Australia and will make contact with your suggestion once I am through with them.

Thanks again
