1st Battalion Egypt circa 1913

Postby CNB » Fri Jul 04, 2008 2:36 pm

I have in my possesion an old and yellowed newpaper cutting from a local newpaper (which one has never been identified) but dates from around the 1960's.
It shows a copy of an informal photo of the men of the 1st, sitting/standing around a veranda type construction, all in shirts and braces.
Over the years I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find the paper and/or original copy.
Has anyone out there any ideas or knowledge of this photo?

Thank you

Don't know about the newspaper but my Grandfather was in Egypt with the 1st so a scanned copy of the photo wouldn't go amiss, you never know, he may be on it!

1st Battalion Egypt

hello there,

You have no contact details on this site so if you want a scanned image of newspaper clipping or photocopy you need to let me have your details.

I do not know that the quality is good enough for any one person to be recognised, though I was fortunate that someone in my family marked my grandad out .

I assume you are aware that the 1st battalion egyptian booklet of photos is on the Worcs site - they ARE very good quality and every member of the battalion is there.

Hi Martin,

You will find it on this website. Select the BATTALIONS button and then from the dropdown list select 1st Battalion then at the top of this new page select the 1914 to 1921 button at the top of this page. This will take you to the page with all the photos - you can then click on the photos for a bigger image.

Many thanks. I'm certain that the drummer lying on his side on the right of the drummers' picture is my great uncle WH Dowse (8217) who died on Vimy Ridge in 1916

Hi Martin,

His army number was 8247 (you incorrectly quoted it as 8217).

I think it very unlikely that he is in that photo as according to his service papers he never served with the 1st Battalion. Below is a summary of his service:

William Henry Dowse (8247) enlisted at Oxford on the 18.02.1904 at the age of only 14 and his rank was therefore "Boy".
He was posted to the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment stationed at Tipperary, Ireland.
14.10.1904 he was appointed "Drummer"
18.02.1906 granted 1st Good Conduct Badge
20.04.1907 posted to the Worcestershire Regiment Depot at Worcester.
02.08.1908 attached to the 5th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
22.10.1908 reverted to rank of Private at own request.
25.10.1908 re-posted to the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
04.04.1913 appointed "Drummer"
02.10.1913 posted to the 6th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
27.05.1915 posted to the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
01.06.1916 killed in action, in France (age 26)

Hope the above helps,

Regards,

You're right, of course. Should have paid more attention to my own notes. Thank you.
