Enlistment Age?

Hi there,

does anyone know whether was an age limit on enlistment in the 1860s? I've got a relative who enlisted at that point aged 18, but I can't trace his birth. It occurred to me that he might have lied about his age, but he seems to have been too old to have had to do that. I've got another ancestor who joined up in 1904 aged 14, but were there any different polices in place in 1860?
