information on my grandfather

Postby canuck » Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:37 pm

My grandfather was awarded a small mug in 1922 when the 4th Btn was disbanded.

The inscription says in part..

S.M.
Presented To
C.S.M. I.M. G. Trenfield
4th Battn

Can anyone shed any light on what this inscription means ??

Any other information about the 4th would be appreciated..I know they were in India since my mother remembers being there as a small child, but I don't know when that was.

thanks..Canuck

Hi Canuck,
There is a Medal Index Card on Ancestry for serjeant George H Trenfield,
2nd Worcesters in 1914. He went to France with the battalion on 12.8.1914 and earned a 1914 star trio and clasp.

The second battalion was in India just before the war. He may have changed battalions during or just after the war, by getting the Medal INdex Card you will get roll reference numbers that can be used to access (in person or via a researcher) the actual rolls and see which battalions he served with. THis information is also with the Regmental Archives, and for a fee they will look it up.

THere is information on both 2nd and 4th battalions before and after the war in the menu on the top of the page, under Battalions.

As to the inscription, I wonder if the first SM can mean Sergeants Mess? CSM is Company Sergeant Major, the IM I can't get a grip on, but I know the battalion was in Ireland just before the disbandment.

Thanks Lars..

Based on the marriage certificate I have, he was George William Trenfield..so I assume the George you noted is a different person.

Thanks for the information..

Either another person or the initial on the MIC is wrong. No other Trenfields in the worcesters I am afraid, and I find no other likely candidates.
