Hi,

George Weale was born at the village of Hatton, near Warwick, on the 13th January, 1781, his father was then Curate of that place. In 1786 the family moved to Rowington, about six miles from Warwick, his father having obtained the curacy of that place; George Weale continued to be educated by his father until 1793, when he was then sent to Warwick to be educated in the Academy of the Revd. Mr Kendall, being then placed under the paternal patronage of his grandfather, a surgeon of eminence, with whom he lodged until the end of 1796 (being then about fifteen years of age). At this time George's father had not come to any decision concerning George's profession.

George decided to leave his home and country and one morning in the month of April 1797, after forming a pretext that his father had used harsh language at him, he put a few things in a bundle and set out.

He made his way to Oxford and there enlisted into a Levy under the title of The Loyal Nottingham Forresters. He was then sent immediately to Chatham as a recruit for general service. Nothing of note took place in his first two years of his service. He was then attached to the 29th Foot, which had just returned from the West Indies.

In June 1798, he went with the 29th Foot Regiment (then at Bideford) and embark at Appledore for Ireland. The Regiment landed at Ballyack, County Waterford, on the 19th June 1798.
