Worcestershire Regiment

Hi,

I would appreciate any information on my Great Grandfather Edward James Henry Spratt. I gather he was Colonel of the 29th Foot Worcestershire Regiment from Mar 1891 to Mar 1895.

Sadly we lost all the family history in a house fire in the 70s. Along with Edward's services medals and history, the medals and diaries of his father (Thomas, Vice Admiral, RN) and grandfather (James, RN, served at Trafalger) were also lost.

I am just working on a webpage about Colonel Edward James Henry Spratt which I will upload to this website shortly, but below is some information:

On the 3rd March 1865 he purchased a commission in to the 29th Foot with the rank of Ensign.
Promoted to Lieutenant on the 12th December 1868.
Promoted to Captain on the 31st August 1878.
In 1879 he was seconded for special service at the Cape of Good Hope.
He served as Sub-Director of Transport throughout the Zulu War of 1879, and was present with the 2nd Division in the engagement at Ulundi. He also served in the operations against Sekukuni in 1879, and was present as Orderly Officer to Colonel Russel, who was commanding the troops at the storming of the stronghold.
He was mentioned in despatches and given the rank of Brevet Major.
On the 24th July 1880 he was given the rank of Brevet Major.
He served in the first Boer War of 1881 as a Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General.
On the 19th may 1886 he was promoted to Major.
On the 2nd March 1891 he was promoted to Lieut.-Colonel and was given command of the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, which he commanded for 4 years and then went on to half-pay on the 2nd march 1895.
On the 25th October 1897 he was made Colonel and given command of the 8th (the King's Liverpool Regiment) and the 40th (the Prince of Wale's Volunteers, South Lancashire Regiment) Regimental District.

I beleive he was born in British S. Multer about 1846 and died in Kensington in 1927 (age 80). He married in 1895. Can you confirm these details and give me exact dates and the name of his wife?

Hi Michael,
I am distantly related to Alice Deacon who married Edward James Henry Spratt in 1895 in Sussex.
EJH died 6 May 1927 Kensington.
I wasn't aware they had any children, but only had their marriage from a small book on the Deacon family privately published in 1899.
I would welcome contact to find our connection through the Deacon family.
