Can anyone please help with information on my Grandad?

Postby nb2k » Mon Mar 09, 2009 4:48 pm

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if any of the amazingly intelligent people could help me out with some information on my late grandad?

His name was (Carl) Clifford Albert Hexter-Stabbins who married in Garrison Church, Abbassia, Cairo, Egypt on 03.12.1942 whilst a "Lieut. S.I.B 1 Worcester Regt.". I think he moved on to the Kings African Rifles after the war then on to Somaliland Scouts when he retired as a Major.

I have the full marriage certificate if that is of any use?

I am looking for his birth date (possibly 20.03.1909) and his original name (I believe it was changed around WWI)? Any other information would be grand!

Thank you,

Hi,

Clifford Albert Hexter-Stabbins was commissioned from the officers Cadets on the 25th April 1941 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. This was an emergency commission. On the 1st October 1946 he was given a Short Service Commission with the rank of Lieutenant.
He was promoted to rank of Captain on the 1st November 1947.
He was promoted to rank of Major on the 25th May 1954.
He relinquished his commission on the 22nd March 1958, rataining the rank of Major.

With regards birth date - On checking the PRO (Public Records Office) birth index I found the following, which may be a match:

Albert C. H. Stabbins born 1913 and mothers maiden surname was also listed as Stabbins (she may not have been married?).
If you want to get a full copy of this birth certificate the registration details are as follows:
Albert C. H. Stabbins
Year = 1913
Quarter = June
Registration District = Axbridge
Volume = 5c
Page = 772

Louis

REPLY POSTED FOR Prof. Helen Ross (The University of Queensland)

Author nb2k on March 9 2009 wanted information about his grandfather, Clifford Allbuy Hexter Stabbins. My father, Diarmid Ross, who is now living in Tasmania knew him well in Somalia around 1952, indeed his wife stood in as my godmother at my Christening. I also used to know his wife, Christine, and daughter Sandra when they lived in Hawthorne, Melbourne in the early 1970s. If you are able to put us in touch with nb2k, I am sure Diarmid would be happy to offer information. I am currently copy editing Diarmid’s memoirs, and they contain some paragraphs of reminiscence about ‘the Baron’ as he was known.

I had the pleasure of serving with "The Baron" as Major Hexter Satbbins was familiarly known when he was Commanding HQ Coy The Somaliland Scouts between 1952 -55. I nave a photograph of him on the occasion of the Queens Birthday Parade 1955 which I would be delighted to email or post on this site if uploading of pictures is permitted.
