Garrison Military Police

Postby CNB » Mon Apr 06, 2009 5:46 pm

My grandfather (1st Batt 10811) was in Egypt 1912-14 and according to one of his leaving papers (army papers seemingly did not survive WW2) he was a GMP during those 2 years.
Does anyone know what this meant? What the work entailed? Why he may have been chosen? I assume this was a separate function from the Royal Military Police?
Many thanks

Hi,

GMP stands for Garrison Military Police. These were soldiers seconded from their unit to police garrison towns. They were normally under the direct control of the garrison Sergeant-Major.

Chapter 4 of the following book "British fighting methods in the Great War" by Paddy Griffith gives details of the organistion of the Military Police and their duties. It was published by Routledge in 1996 (ISBN 0714634956).

Hope this helps,

Louis
