England Miles(1778-) 36th Herefordshire Regiment of Foot

Postby raydeebee » Sat Jul 14, 2012 1:36 pm

On the record of his marriage (20th November 1799) at St Sampson's Church, Cricklade, Wiltshire ENGLAND MILES, born 1778 in Worcester, my great, great, great grandfather it is noted that he served in The 36th (Hereford) Regiment of Foot. A witness to the marriage is a Godwin (no other names) 36 Regiment of Foot Herefordshire. On his daughters Marriage Certificate dated July 1841 his occupation is stated as Soldier. Is it likely that given the battle history of the 36th that an ordinary soldier, there is no reason to believe that he was anything but, would have survived over 40 years. There was an England Miles who was buried in Secunderabad, Madras, India on 1st June 1816. Was the 36th in India at that time. Any thoughts on who 'Godwin' was. There was a Thomas Godwin born about 1779 at Cricklade. Help would be appreciated especially if the England Miles buried in India is my ggg gf because that would mean that his daughter m.1841, my gg grandmother, was not his daughter as she was born 1820 and he would not be my ggg gf after all. Hope somebody can help. I tried National Archives but they reckoned an extensive search was required by either a visit to Kew or a paid researcher with no guarantee of success. Both not an option at this time.
