Movements of 29th Foot

Postby mikeprice1998 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 2:50 pm

I have become a little confused on the website timeline of the 29th Foot regiment from 1840 to 1880 - different parts of the site appear to have conflicting locations!

For instance one part says that they embarked for Burma in 1854 before returning to Aldershot Barracks in 1858 but another says that they were in India during that period returning in 1859 via Portsmouth to Preston & Weedon - although I do appreciate that they were in Aldershot at the time of the 1861 Census.

Does anyone have a more precise timeline - I am particularly interested in the whereabouts of the regiment in 1849, 1851, 1852, 1858, 1859

I know that the 2nd Sikh War finished in March 1849 - would the 29th or part of it have then been returned to England - could they have been in Plymouth at the end of 1849?

There is no mention of their whereabouts in 1851/2 - there do not appear to be census returns for 1851 - were they on home soil or abroard - could they have been in Newcastle in late 1852?

Would they have returned to England in 1858 as stated on one part of the website or were they still in India or Burma or elsewhere - would they have been back at Aldershot or another location on home soil in 1859?

Hope someone can help. Many thanks, Mike

Incidentally, the website has the 29th at Aldershot (Farnborough) in 1861 Census - but you will also find them on Ancestry at Fulwood Barracks (Preston, Lancs) on images 27 to 35 of the 57 image set which covers the Barracks.
