Hi

I'm trying to trace as much information as possible about my grandfathers time in the regiment and where he served.
His name was Thomas Evans, a private I believe, was from West Bromwich and had a service number of 9822.
Any information you are able to provide would most useful.

Many thanks

Barry Smith

Hi Barry,

He served with the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal (2 medals).

His army number would suggest he had served with the Regiment before the war. However, the fact that he was not entitled to a Star Medal (either the 1914 Star of the 1915 Star) would suggest he went overseas to France in 1916 or later.

Hope this helps,

Louis (webmaster)

Hi Louis

Thank you very much for this which confirms information which has since come to light - I have now come across His Paybook, discharge certificate and character certificate, and these show that he served 6 years in total from Aug 1915 (3yrs 205 days in the colours and 2 yrs 160 days in the special reserve). He did receive the British War Medal and Victory Medal - which I also have - with 'Chevrons One Blue' which I understand was worn for each years service overseas. This would tally with your comments re. France.

Is there any way of finding out where and when he would have served in France, as this would help flesh out his story?

Many thanks once again

Barry

Also forgot to mention, from his paybook he was in the 5th Worcs Reg. & Company 'B'.
