Hi,

Would someone kindly advise on how I may find out about an ancestor who was in the 3rd Battalion rifle Brigade in 1860, please?

I'm looking to find information on a private William H. MITCHELL who was in India & registered his son's birth in Agra, India in Jan 1860.

Advice as to how I might find out more on William's army history/career & where he may have been born/recruited would be very welcome.

I cannot get down to Kew, so any information is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Sandy

Hi Sandy
Your best bet would be to firstly try the Greenjackets HQ The Rifle Brigade along with The Royal Rifle Corps where amalgamated some years ago to form the Greenjackets if they cannot help themselves they will possibly tell you where to write to

Thanks for the prompt reply Clive. I will try to get in touch with the Greenjackets HQ. My understanding of the way battalions were made up is very limited, & I think the Greenjackets period is a long time after the period I'm interested in...or am I wrong for such an assumption?

Sandy

Hi Sandy
Yes you are quite correct and shortly (2007) they will be changed again with two or three other regiments joining them to make up a regiment which will be known as the RIFLES with a bugle cap badge it is a bit more of the politicians meddling but they will be able I am sure to give you or point the way to where you can get the information you rquire.
