Valuable Resource

I have found a valuable resource of information on the lads from the Worcester Regiment during the Great War. I recently visited the Worcester History Centre, Trinity St, Worcester. I was looking for a picture of my Great Uncle, George William Hill and any other information. The main newspaper during this time was “Berrows Worcester Journal”. They have all copies on microfish so it is reasonable easy to scan the issues. If you know when your relative was wounded or killed start at that date, then keep going. My Great Uncle was killed on the 28 April 1916 but was shown as missing in the 27 May issue. It also gave a paragraph on the action. It pays to keep looking. Berrows also had a picture pullout in the weekly paper. This is kept in book format which you can view. Its full of pictures of Worcester Regiment men. Unfortunately George’s picture was not there, but hopefully you may have better luck.

I have searched the Birmingham Central Library but there is little to no information on the Worcester Regiment although many of the man were born/living in Birmingham.

I initially found George whilst looking for my Grandfather in the “National Roll of the Great War” which can be bought from “S&N Genealogy Supplies” about £15.00. It is in different sections covering Great Britain, section 6 covers Birmingham. I am prepared to check my copy for you if required but it is not comprehensive. My Grandfather was not included even though he lived in Birmingham. BUT more important I found George in there and he had virtually been forgotten within the family only known as one son who had been blown up in the First War.

If your relative survived try the “Absent Voters List” this was started in 1917 when ever man who was away had to be listed. The list shows Name, Rank, Serial number and Regiment. All you need is his name and address. The main library should have this information.

This wedsite holds much very useful information, I found the “post” reply to Paul on the 24 Sept 06 by Mike Jones especially helpful in my initial searches.

If you have managed to find any other sources, please let me know.
