military medal

Postby Daveyboy » Sun Jul 01, 2007 9:35 pm

I am trying to find out any information on my Grandfather John Thomas Williams, I know he won a military medal in 1917 at Guillemont farm, I would like to know if there is any more information available about him or even if anyone happens to know if I could find a photograph of him, group or singular.
Regards
Dave Williams

Hi Davey
I have found in the Worcester Regiment in the Great War on page 250-251 an account of the engagement and also a mention of the award of the MM to your Grandfather. I was going to reproduce it for you but I re-read the licence agreement which does not allow it. You can either find a copy in your local library or purchase a CD from www.midlandshistoricaldata.org It cost £15.00 and is an excelled record of the Worcester Regiment.

The following awards were given for that engagement—Lt.-Col. F. M. Tomkinson, bar to D.S.O. Capt.
Prescott, bar to M.C. The M.C. to Capt. G. G. Watson, Lt. A. O. Lloyd, Lt. W. C. Cassels, Lt. J. W. D.
Melhuish. The M.M. to Sgt. A. Darby. Sgt. H. S. Handey, Cpl. A. Breeze, L/Cpl. J. T. Williams, L/Cpl. G. Sneyd, Pte. A. Bishop, Pte. J. Payton.

Thankyou for your help, I do have access to the 1914-1918 book, what I'm trying to do is find out more if possible, I also have copies from the war diaries which shows he got the MM for being a sniper, this was obtained from Norton Barracks a few years ago. I'm just wondering if it's possible to find out any other information and if there may be a photo of him or the regiment at the time of the war.
Sadly I now know one of my uncles sold the medal, does anyone know where would be the best place to start looking to find it.
Regards
Dave

Hi Davey, Sorry I could not be of more help. As for your medals, its always worth checking ebay, it's what I'm doing. Not so long ago someone found their Granfathers complete medal set including his MM this way. If anyone knows of a better/quicker way please let us both know.
Have you tried the pictorial suppliment of Berrows Worcester Journal? This was a weekly newspaper in Worcester with a pictorial suppliment. There is a book at the Worcester History Centre which contains all the Worcestershire pictures from 1914 - 1918. See my post Valuable Resources. When I was there last, one of the Librarians was starting to list the names of all the Lads that have photographs in the book. Worth a phone call he may have finished. With you Grandfather winning the MM there is a very good chance that he is there. If you find any other sources of photographs, please let me know as I'm trying to find my Great Uncle. Good Hunting. Regards Allan
