My grandfather sailed across to Boulogne on the SS Michigan & SS Hershel and camped at "Camp Marlborough" before moving on inland. I have been able to discover quite a bit, but what happened after the retreat from Frameries on 25th.
Any information would be gratefully received. His brother was with him after being transferred and during one battle my GF turned round to him to warn him of incoming shells and was blown up right in front of him. The story goes that he immediately arose, shot 7 germans, and said," thats for killing my brother". :!: Don't know how much truth there is in this. Anyhow any information would be much appreciated.

Hi Tony,

Your Grandfather would have sailed to Boulogne on either the Michigan or Herschel depending on which Company he served in. Headquarters Company, 'A' Company, 'B' Company, Machine Gun Section and Headquarters Detail were on the 'Lake Michigan' and 'C' Company, 'D' Company, Transport Officer, Quarter Master and Headquarters Detail on the 'Herschel'.

The following details I have for your Grandfather on the database:

Private 12585 Walter Hubert Rollings.
Born 1899. He was groom to Captain Senhouse-Clarke at the time of the battle of Gheluvelt. Died aged 76 20th March 1966 Kidderminster.
Disembarked 12.08.1914 (from MIC).

As you will appreciate the 2nd Battalion Worcesters were involved in many actions and much movement in France and Belgium, too much to type out on this posting. The best reference I can suggest is 'The Worcestershire Regiment in the Geart War' by Captain H. FitzM. Stacke (a copy may be available at your local reference library) or the 2nd Battalion War Diary 1914 (a copy can be requested from the Regimental Museum for a small fee, see this website for details). Another good book for reference to the Worcesters (1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions) for 1914 is Ray Westlakes 'British Battalions in France and Belgium 1914'(Leo Cooper 1997). Again your local library may have a copy otherwise a search on AbeBooks for a second hand copy is worth while. A reprint in two volumes (SB) of Stackes book can be obtained from 'The Naval & Military Press Ltd. (Price £65)
www.naval-military-press.co.uk

I hope this is of some help to you.

Work still in progress on the Gheluvelt database and at present I have just under 400 names on it. It is now over 3 years that I have been working on this database and a lot of avenues have been used to find information on these men but I still need to find details for many more men that have no records on Ancestry (other than MIC details). The database holds just over 1600 names of 2nd Battalion men who went to France/Belgium between August and December 1914. If you think you had a relative (or know of a soldier) that served during this time and can supply information that would be very helpful.

Hi Peter,
I don't know if you have this mans details - 9441 Pte William Sharp, to F&F 12.08.14 2nd Bn on 1914 star, later served Labour Corps and discharged Sept 1917.

I had no luck finding the paperwork to J Vaughan, however my wife and i are relocating our base back to the UK so the paperwork should appear when everything is unpacked again! I will keep you updated.

Regards,
Rick

Work still in progress on Gheluvelt list with a lot more information added to the database of late. It would be a great help if anyone reading this posting knows details (or has a photograph) of any 2nd Battalion soldier who served with the Battalion until at least the end of 1914 (and after) to get in touch. No matter how little information you may have it will all go to help complete this project and will benefit the Worcester Regiment Archives.

Would you be interested in a few details on 8509 L/Cpl GH Steward? Mostly ancestry - wonder if you have them?

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

Sorry for late reply but have been away for a few days.

Thank you for your offer with information on Lance Corporal 8509 George Henry Steward. I have his service papers from Ancestry, also his MIC and information from CWGC site but if you have any additional details they would be most welcome (Birth date details, etc.)

Regards
