23rd Division

Postby bellydancer63 » Sun Aug 31, 2008 10:10 pm

Hello,
I am totally confused! My grandfather was a signaller in the 23rd Division and I have been trying to trace the division's movements throughout the war. I have been reading 'The Worcestershire Regiment in the Great War' and know that they formed part of the 1st Battalion but then I loose track of them and can't work out whether they become part of a different division or whether all the entries concerning the 1st battalion, include the 23rd Division. I am trying to personalise the movements, as I am creating a book of my grandfathers life, to present to my own father.
Can anyone help?
Best Wishes
Gill

1st Bn Worcs went to France with 24th Brig in the 8th Div on 5th November 1914. On 18th October 1915 the 24th Brig was transferred to 23rd Div(70th Brig of the 23rd Div went to 8th Div in the exchange) On 15th July 1916 24th Brig returned to the 23rd Div.
Presumably your grandfather was a Bn signaller rather than a Disional signaller which were grouped under the 23rd Signal company in the 23rd Div. I think in those days signallers wore the RE cap badge. What does his MIC say Worcs or RE?
