11038 Lt George Alfred Turley

Postby Turley504 » Sun Mar 01, 2009 12:47 pm

I am trying to gather any information on 11038 Lt George Alfred Turley, commissioned into the Worcs Regt on 25 Sep 1917 from the ranks of the South Staffordshire Regt.

George was only 17 and a pte at the time and i am led to believe he is the youngest ever soldier to be given a battlefield commission in WW1. Whilst in the Worcesters he was attached to the RAF. I have no idea if he became a pilot or not.

George was born in 1900, he went to france on the 24 -8 -1915, clearly underage and was awarded the 1915 star, the war and victory medals.
i have his date of discharge as 27 July 1921. His commision date is recorded in records at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and he appears in officer lists in the RMAS library from 1917 upto 1921.

I believe he died in powys in 1989. (Death record seen)
George is my great uncle and was believed killed in france. My father had always thought this until i told him otherwise.

If anyone can help with further research into George and his irregular career i would be most grateful.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Andrew,

His medal index card shows that whilst he was in the R.A.F he did not hold a commission and therefore would not have been a pilot.

He was originally a private soldier in the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 11038) and entered the theatre of war in France on the 24th August 1915. As you have indicated he was later given a commission in the field on the 25th September 1917 and was then attached to the Worcestershire Regiment. He was later transferred to the R.A.F. but not as an officer.

His home address on his medal card was: 24 Theresa Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham.

On checking the 1911 Britisgh Census, I found the only George Alfred Turley (age 13) living in Worcesters. According to the Birth records he was born in 1897 and the birth was registered at Pancras, London.

I just wonder if you may be looking at a different George Alfred Turley - there was one born in Walsall in 1900.

Regards,

Louis

Hello,

There is George E Turley, (but on the original it looks more like an A)
listed on the 1901 census, as living at 87 Clarence Rd, Kings Heath,
Birmingham, Born 1899, Dad - George, Mother - Mabel G, Sister - Ilene R.

Could this be your Man?

Cheers
John.
