Hi everyone. I am looking for some help here. The above, my great great uncle, was killed at Gallipoli on 10th August 1915(apparently on his 21st Birthday, although i have not confirmed this as yet) and i'm trying to work out where he was killed. I believe he was probably killed at 'the farm' below Chunuk Bair but as the 9th Worcesters barely register a mention in any books regarding Gallipoli, i cannot confirm this(even this sites 9th Battalion doesn't cover this). Can anyone help fill me in on the details i need?

many thanks

Mark

The 10th August was the last day of the 4 day battle of Sari Bair in which the allied offensive at Sulva and Anzac had failed. The allied line was a confusion of intermingled units and it was against this line that the Turks launched a counter attack with 6 Bns over Chunuk Bair. The 9th Worcs was in the front line on the Farm Plateau in advance of the units on either flank and the Bn was heavily bombed and the CO killed, the Bn withdrew to to the line of the Aghyl Dere.

Hope this helps
Kevin

Thanks Kevin, very much appreciated. I suppose i get a little annoyed that the 9th Worcesters barely get a mention with regards to Gallipoli.

Hi Mark

If you look in the 18th September 1915 edition of the Worcester Herald your Great Great Uncles, along with 37 other Lads of the 9th Battalion is reported Killed.

Thanks Allan, i will check it out. I saw some photos of him last week( i never knew they existed) in his uniform. One on his own, one with him and three others and one with him with about six or seven others.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Mark

No problem Mark. I am sure that Louis would be interested in the photographs. You can send them via a link on the home page. Look forward to putting a face to the name.

Hi Allan,

I have now emailed two photo's of Charles, there are other soldiers with Charles in these photo's and wouldn't it be good if someone could put some names to the other faces.

Hi Mark,
You get them from the local register office or apply on line for it (£7 for the last one I got). They are recorded at the General Register Office, England under Deaths (Special Provisions Act 1957). But if you are hoping for much detail on the certificate, you will be disappointed. Under place of death it will say "Dardanelles" , under cause of death it will say "Killed in Action". They are all of the same format, a bare minimum of information. Just an official document so next-of kin could claim pensions or insurances etc.. I have not yet seen a death certificate of a soldier who died in England. I think and hope they contain more details.
Regards Mike
