Casualty Lists

Does anyone know if any of the casualty lists still exist in the archives for the battalions involved in WW1?

Hi ????????

I have been working on & recording the casualty lists for the Worcestershire Regiment for the last 3 years as reported in the Worcester Herald. Is there someone that you are looking for?

Allan,

I dip in and out of these posts as my time dictates but I would be very keen in finding out what you have on my Gt Grandfather. My own research indicates that he was wounded and sent home to the UK in 1914 far earlier in the conflict than the family knew about but I have not managed to ascertain why or when he returned to his unit. Or indeed was this his only bout of sickness, wounds etc. He did eventuallend up in a POW camp and was released early due to wounds received later in the war.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks Lee

His details;
George Victor Huzzey
3rd Batt. Worcestershire Rgt.

Hi Allan,

I guess the inevitable next question is do you know how I would take that forward in terms of the hospital records. I have completed a fair bit of research over the years but not on the in patients in hospitals!

And of course, thank you, we only knew he was returned from a POW camp as he was injured but that was in 1918.

Hi Lee

Sorry but I do not know if these records still exist or where they could be found. I would also be very interested in looking at them. Maybe someone on the forum can point us in the right direction.

Is 240467 Cpl. Percy Victor Allen mentioned in Casualty List

Postby David Green » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:16 am

Hello

My grandfather was wounded in WW1, possibly in 1916 but I don't know for sure. I know he was invalided back to Worcester, and ended the war working in the Records Office. His first serial number was 2386 and then later 240467, he was a Corporal and possibly in the 1/8th. I'm wondering if there is any mention of him among the casualty lists or if he is mentioned in the Worcester Herald?
Thanks much.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can help me find out if there is any record in the casualty lists for my Grandfather.

I have looked in the medal rolls and believe that he was Corporal then Lance Serjeant Edward Stanley Number 19504 9th Battalion Worcester Regiment.

He served in Gallipoli and was wounded in the arm within hours/days of arriving in there (Date of Entry in theatre given as 10.9.15). I understand that he was on a hospital ship within a fortnight (may have been less) of arriving there. The wound rendered his left arm useless and he spent the rest of the war years as a farm labourer.

I would also be interested in finding out here & when he signed up. I know he was born in Todenham & i think signed up in Broadway Worcs.

Hi Stobbo

I have looked through the casualty lists in the Worcester Herald and the only entry I can find is in the 15th January 1916 edition.

It shows :- 10504 Lanc Sergt E. Stanley 4th Batt

Allan,

thank you very much for your efforts on my behalf. I reckon that the entry you have found refers to my Grandfather even though the number is not quite correct.

The date is quite interesting because it is later that I had expected it to be but I guess that the reports took some time to filter back from the front lines to the UK newspapers for publication, especially from the more remote theatres of war. Have you any idea how much time lag typically occurred between the actual date of a casualty and the report appearing in the press ?

Hi Andy

The casualty reports were done on a daily basis, or as circumstances allowed, in the trenches. These were then sent back to HQ, who then sent them to England. On the Western Front this only took a few days. They were then released to the newspapers. So on average the time was within 1 week.

For Gallipoli, I can only give you an example of the times taken to report my Great Uncle who was wounded there.

22 May 1915 edition of the Worcester Herald he was reported as wounded 11 May 1915.
3 July 1915 edition reported as in hospital in England on the 22 June 1915. So it only took 11 days for the report of his wound and 42 days for him to be back in England in hospital. Another 11 days for the report in the paper. The Worcester Herald was a weekly paper, published on a Saturday so the reports may have been received earlier.

It’s a pity that the post isn’t as quick today.

Just as an aside. It was important to get the names of the men that were Killed back as soon as possible, as the day they died, was the day their pay stopped!!!!

Contact me on my email address and I will send you a picture of the entry. It is not the best quality but it was taken from a micofish screen.

Casualties in Battle of Poelcappelle, Ypres, Ocotber 1917

Postby jimwilliams » Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:07 pm

I am trying to find an obituary for 38312 Private George Stokes who died with the 4th Battalion Worcestershires when it took Namur Crossing during the Battle for Poelcappelle on 9th October 1917.

I am also seeking more information on how he died as he has a marked grave in Cement House Cemetery in Langemark near Ypres. I have viewed the War Diairies at Kew but they give no idea of what assault company he was in or how he was killed

Many thanks

Hi Jim

I have found a reference in the 17th November 1917 edition of the Worcester Herald of:-

38312 Pte G. Stokes – Black Heath - Killed.

It would be worth checking the local newspapers in the Black Heath area for an obituary.

Thank you Allan, that's great to know. I will now do some research on local newspapers in this area now that I know a rough date for possible references.

Could I just ask that if you come across his name again in any other context that you flag this up to me as I may not be aware of the point concerned?

Regards
Jim
