38312 Pte George Stokes - 9th October 1919

Postby jimwilliams » Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:16 pm

I am looking for any information on the company of the 4th Worcestershires that my great uncle served with during the Third Ypres Campaign in 1917.

He was 19 years old when he was killed on 9th October 1917 when the Battalion took Namur Crossing near Langemark during the Battle for Poelcappelle. I have viewed the War Diaries at Kew and this is the action where Dancox won his VC for taking the German blockhouse at Namur Crossing, but it gives no specific names for casualties or where specifically they fell, He has a marked grave near Langemark so his body was retrieved shortly after the action rather than left in the field.

Many thanks if anyone can help
I am interested in all aspects of the Third Ypres Campaign in 1917

Jim.

you were correct,
38312 does not relate to the george stokes Iam looking for.
It appears that I have the wrong connection.

I had assumed that due to the army nos being so close (38291-38312),
that they were the same relation,(should have checked 1st).

Anyway, Louis has put me on the right path, (this after some twenty years).

Thanks for your help.

regards.

Webmaster.

Thanks for your information, most helpful.

I have photographs of the memorials at Gallipoli (cape St Helles).
of all the Worcestershire regiment, if you want me to PlumPudding and forward to you, let me know.

They were taken 2 years ago on a visit to Turkey.

Regards.
