Worcestershire Regiment

I wonder if anyone can help or at least point me in the right direction.

I am trying to trace details of William Barlow (born 1893 in Reading, Berkshire) for his son (also William Barlow).

At age 86, he is desperately trying to discover his father's history and believes he served in 3rd Battalion as a CSM. His recollection of family stories is that his father served in India immediately prior to going to France but the battalion history for 3rd doesn't seem to bear this out.

If it helps any, I've managed to trace his uncle, (his father's elder brother) Joseph Barlow, who served in 9th Battalion and was killed in action on 12 August 1915 in Gallipoli and is commemerated on the Helles Memorial.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

18th September 1915 edition

Previously reported wounded, now reported wounded and missing

I have looked for William but can only find one from Birmingham.

Thanks Allan for the swift reply and the information you discovered on Joseph.

I know that William survived the First World War so I'm assuming that he wouldn't therefore have been mentioned in the Herald.

Do you know if there is any searchable database that I can access that gives a full roll of enlisted men in the Worcester Regt.?

The Reading Standard issued WW1 news reports throughout the war on local soldiers. These were collected into "Berkshire & the War" which was a journal. The Berkshire and The War series, of which there are 39 volumes, is a unique record of Berkshire contribution to the First World War. Compiled between 1915 and 1919 it includes photographs and articles first published in the reading Standard as well as retrospective accounts written especially for this publication. around 9000 men are recorded , mainly from the Royal Berkshire Regiment and the Berkshire Yeomanry. However, men from Berkshire served in almost every unit of the British military and so almost all the regiments and corps of the army are represented as are units of the Royal Marines and ships of the Royal Navy.
