Worcestershire Regiment

I am hoping that someone will be able to help concerning a problem with my father's army career. He was Charles Henry Burton and enlisted in the 7th Battalion in Feb 1914 at Stourport. In due course he joined the 2_7th as he was too young to be sent abroad to fight. However he was eventually sent to France in Feb 1916, before the 2_7th were sent at the end of May 1916. Would he have joined (and remained with) the 1_7th who were already fighting? I hope someone will be able to answer my query or even have an opinion on it.

Later in the War I know that he served with the 10th, 2_8th and 1st Battalions.

Hi David,

Private Charles Henry Burton orginal army number was 2136 but it was changed to 200400. He enlisted on the 11.2.1914 stating his age as 21 (however is age was 17) joining the 2/7th Battalion. He embarked from Southampton on the 6.2.1916 and disembarked at Havre on the 7. 2.1916. He joined the 1st Battalion and was posted to B Company.

In June 1917 he was admitted to Casualty Clearing Station and Hospital for I think Trench Foot.

He was posted to the 46th Infantry Brigade Depot at Rouen on the 4.8.1917.

He was granted leave to the UK in 1917 from 10.8.1917 to 20.8.1917.
He rejoined the 46th Infantry Brigade Depot at Rouen on the 22.8.1917.

He was posted to the 10th Battalion on the 7.9.1917 and joined the battalion in the field the following day.
He was wounded on the 4.10.1917 - gun shot wound. He was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station and then on to the General Hospital at Rouen on the 7.10.1917. He was transferred back to England on the 14.10.1917.

He was posted to the 7th (Reserve) Battalion at Blythe on the 5.2.1918.
He embarked from Folkestone on the 24.3.1918 and disembarked at Boulogne on the 30.3.1918.

He was posted to the 2/8th Battalion on the 1.4.1918.

Discharged 7.4.1919.

Thanks very much for the information. Your database certainly contains facts I have not been able to find. To add to what you have told me my father was posted to the 1st Battalion on 8.4.1918, joined the next day and was then reported missing on 27.5.1918. I understand that he was gassed and taken prisoner by the Germans. I have a Red Cross postcard dated 9.8.1918 sent to his father stating that he has been taken prisoner but is well.

10th November 1917 edition
200400 Pte C. H. Burton – Stourport - Wounded

3rd August 1918 edition - Missing
