Walter James Alfred Unitt 242224 reg no 6670

Postby dawnunitt » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:33 pm

Hello
I am looking to find out information about my grandfather who served with the worcestershire Regiment and was awarded a medal in 1918.
My father is anxious to find out more information. I can find no details other than the one medal card on the national archives.

My grandmother sold my grandfathers medal in desparation my father thinks - many years ago and we have no information about his service or his medal.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Dawn,

Private Walter James Alfred Unitt was awarded the Military Medal (published in the London Gazette 13th September 1918).

His first army number was 6670 but this later changed to 242224.

His first number would suggest he enlisted prior to 1914.

Thankyou for the swift reply.
Can you advise or post me to where I can find further information about his service.

If only we could find his medals!

Hi Dawn,

According to his medal card he was awarded 2 medals.
British War Medal
Victory Medal
Plus his Military Medal so 3 medals in all.

On his medal card you will find a reference number:
Roll number = L/102B26 Page number = 6442
At the National Archives held at Kew you can find further details on the Medal Roll by quoting these number this should tell you which battalion he served with and give some dates.

As he was NOT awarded a Star Medal he did not go overseas until after 1915. So he would have gone overseas between 1916-1918.
