My lads class are going to hold a ceremony at the village war memorial on 11th Nov. I thought I would contribute by illustrating the life one of the names on the memorial and giving the children something tangible rather than just a list of names to read out.
The man(youth) I have selected is Pte 23596 Arthur Mayo who DoW on 2nd January 1918 at number 5 Australian General Hospital. He was WiA on the 29th December 1917, does anyone know where the 1st Bn was on the 29th December?
Arthurs brother Charles, whose name also appears on the memorial was KIA the previous August.

Thanks

Kevin

According to Stacke's history on Dec 26th the Battalion were in the Passendaele trenches being relieved by 24th Brigade. Came under fire as they struggled over the Passendaele Ridge, later taking over trenches from 7th Battalion, Rifle Brigade and settled down in north-east sector of Ypres Salient. For 4 days the Battalion held those trenches despite bitter frost & snow suffering severely. Enemy shell fire was continuous. On Dec 30th the Battalion was relieved by 2nd Lincolns.
