Hi,

I am new to this, and am not sure what to do next, other than visit Kew, which is difficult for me at the moment. I am trying to find some details on the service of two of my grandad's cousins, but all I have is:

Private Thomas Candelent, 53077, Worcestershire Regiment

Private Harold Candelent, 11th Btn Worcestershire Regiment

They were both from the Aston/Handsworth/Hockley area of Birmingham. If you have any information at all, it would be great.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
Is the Brookfields area of Birmingham near Aston/Handsworth/Hockley?

Kevin,

Brookfields is indeed, Hockley Station was right in the middle of it.

Paul,

In The national Roll Of Honour Section VI there is a listing for
"L Cpl H J Candelent Rifle Brigade
Volunteered in 1914, and after completing a period of training proceeded to France early in the following year. Here he took part in numerous battles and engagements during the whole period of hostilities and was wounded on three occasions. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals, and was demobilisedin 1919.
4, Berkley Terrace, New Spring Street, Brookfields, Birmingham."

An unusual surname, is he in the family tree?

Kevin

Thanks Kevin,

That is my grandad, Henry Joseph, who was born in 1893. The Candelents in Birmingham at that time all lived within walking distance of each other, before starting to expand into Essex and the US. There are a couple who served in the US army in the Great War, but I've not managed to get onto them yet.

Thanks Gents, that is all new information. It sounds as though when Thomas was reported missing, that could have been when he was a POW? Thanks for the help,

Paul
