Worcestershire Regiment

I am interested in any information on my 2x Great Grandfather Arthur Buckle from Pershore who served with the 4th Battalion Worcester's No. 22798. He was KIA on Oct 29th 1916 and is buried in a cemetery in Nunhead London. Any information or help on him would be great.

Hi Tyrone,

Private Arthur Buckle (22798) enlisted in to the army in Birmingham and served with the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in Gallipoli. He joined the 4th Battalion with a draft of new men on the 18th August 1915.

He was wounded in action and transferred back to hospital in the U.K. However, he later died as a result of his wounds on the 29th October 1916 (age 33).

It is worth noting that the 4th Battalion were moved from Gallipoli to France in March 1916. They disembarked at Marseilles on the morning of 20th March 1916. During July 1916 the 4th Battalion were involved in the attack on Beaumont Hamel (The Somme). On the night of July 29th/30th 1916 the 4th Battalion moved forward by train to Ypres and were to remain in action for some 2 months before leaving again for the Somme (8th October 1916).

It is very likely that he was wounded in France possibly early October 1916

He was awarded the following medals:
1915 Star
British War Medal
Victory Medal

The medal rolls are held at the National Archives at Kew and may be able to give you more information.

Arthur Buckle was born in Pershore in1885 to William and Hannah Buckle and the brother of Joseph and George Charles.
He joined the 6th Batt Worcestershire Militia as Pte.6477 on 27/3/1902 and was discharged ''Time Expired'' 26/3/1908.
On 14/8/1914 he joined the Royal Field Artillery as Drv. 81565 but discharged on 3/3/1915.
He was later to enlist in the army again as 22798 Pte. Worcestershire Regt.

Militia Papers for him are on the pay for site Find my Past and Service Papers on Ancestry.
His two brothers service papers can also be found on either Ancestry or Find my Past.

Hi all thank you for the reply, I have been to Australia so haven't been researching my tree for some time. As it is coming up to the 100th Anniversary of WW1 I thought I would have another look at my gt gt grandfathers records.
