Hi Steve,
Were either of the other two brothers that died Worcestershire regiment men at the time of their death, please? I have been noting down all sets of brothers to die as "Our" men. So far I have 59 sets of brothers who died in the Regiment.

One of the things I have learned whilst researching the men commemorated on Dudley's War Memorial is the number of chaps I find with consecutive regimental numbers, meaning (I presume) they went to the Recruiting Office together. In two instances, lads joined together and died on the same day.

Most sad.

Hi Chris,
I will try to answer some of the questions from your last post. But first please, where did the foto of Alfred in the charge at Gheluvelt come from? Has Peter got a copy of it yet? Gheluvelt is his “baby” project. Alfred could have been gassed more than once. Whilst any gassing was serious and must have been exceedingly traumatic, Alfred was NEVER awarded a Silver War Badge. So any gassing that he suffered was not permanently debilitating. As I have said before, there is no sign that Alf was discharged until after the war ended.. Alf may well have had friends in other regiments but he served in no other regiment during the war. I know this because his Victory and War medals were authorised by the Worcestershire Regiment. On his Medal Index Card are the code letters “L/102B15/Page 3315”. These show the last Regiment he served in, in the Great War and it was the Worcesters !
Now none of us researchers know how many gas attacks the 2nd Bn. suffered in the Great War nor offhand can I give you the date of any of them. No one to my knowledge has ever checked it out. I would like to know though ! Now what a researcher would do (If he needed that information) is to go through the Regimental History written by Captain Stacke, page by page and add them all up. Sorry, Chris but that is what you must do if you really want to finish the story on Pte. Alfred Howells 8140. Please let us know your findings.
Regards Mike

Hi Chris

I have found a reference to William in both the Worcester Herald & the Bromsgrove & Droitwich Messenger 3rd April 1915 editions.

Killed in Action
9601 Pte W. Howells - 3rd Battalion under date 12th March 1915

I cannot find any reference to 8140 Pte A. Howells.

I have found these references to Gas in Stacke's for the 2nd Battalion:-

21st September 1915
25th September 1915
July 1916 - Somme
27/28th February 1917 - Bouchavesnes

GEORGE THOMAS STEVENS - 12897, 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment

I have other information as I just had a search done by the Worcester regiment achieve

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Died 15th July 1916, aged 22
Born at Upton Warren near Bromsgrove
Son of Joseph and Mary Ann Stevens (nee Hipkiss). Joseph was a farmworker. They had twelve children:

Enlisted at Worcester.
Went to France on 12th August 1914.
Killed at High Wood.

Listed @ Aston Fields War memorial and Thiepval memorial to the missing.

The Bromsgrove Droitwich and Redditch Messenger 23rd September 1916

FEARED DEATH OF MISSING FINSTALL MAN
A letter has been received from a company officer of the Worcestershires with regard to Private George Thomas Stevens, of Stone House Farm, Finstall, near Bromsgrove, who has been missing since July 15th. The officer writes that Private Stevens
"acted as my runner during the action on July 15th.He was sent out in front with a message and did not return. I am afraid he was undoubtedly killed, as we searched afterwards for wounded, but could not find him. I should be very obliged if you would convey to the parents of Private Stevens my deep regret at his loss. He was in every way a most excellent soldier, and always did his duty well. Previous to July 15th, he acted as servant to one of my officers, who also asks me to express his sorrow at his loss. Had Private Stevens lived, he would have been recommended for the Military Medal."

Hi Crisp,
If your JOHN PERKINS family consisted ,in 1905, of father John ,mother Eliza and brother William(serving with 1st Batt.SWB)and was
5ft 5ins tall ,with multiple tattoos, then he served for 61days as Pte.8757 South Wales Borders.
Born Newport Monmouthshire in the late 1880s, his Service Papers can be found on the FIND MY PAST SITE.

Morning One and All,
Thank you Corona for your continued interest and input on posts 9 and 24. With regard to posting 24, you mention Pte. Harry Smith 7754. Another re-called reservist ! So we started to check out the 1911 census to see what strength each battalion was at. It seems they were all up to strength, so why so many reservists? We have not been able to find the 1st Bn. yet. We know they were on the Isle of Wight somewhere. Do you know the enumeration district and image number by chance, please?
Thank you Allan for your information on post 35. I will fone you about the gas attacks you uncovered in Captain Stacke’s book.
Hi Chris Perkins, You are the first descendant of a Cathedral Roll entrant who still bears the same surname to come forward ! All the rest of us have descended from our grandfather’s daughters. Strange twist that. I shall have to see my psychiatrist (Again). Pte. John Perkins 9523 is 2 C/R entry 878 and 2 S/R entry 846. He applied for and got his Clasp and Roses on 11th Feb 1921. Does any family member still have his medals ? I have added all the information you have sent to his file, thanks. I think he did the usual and fibbed about his age on enlistment. The only John Perkins I can find born Newport at the appropriate time was born 1st Quarter 1889. Making him 16 when he enlisted on 13.10.1905. You check his age on the 1911 census, it does not add up. By the way, my Grandfather Pte. Richard Marsh 9078 was with your grandfather in Barielly, India in 1911 and again on 12th August 1914 in France. I wonder if... ?

Hi Mike,
On the 1911 Census the 1st.Batt. Worcs. can be found as follows:-
ALBANY BARRACKS
REG.DIST. ISLE OF WIGHT
SUB DIST.NEWPORT.
ENNUMERATATION 17
PARISH CARISBROOKE
RG NUMBER 14 PIECE 5714
You can also use the Hampshire County Box and Soldier for Occupation.
As for JOHN PERKINS ,I indicated in my earlier post, I believe him to have enlisted into the SWB( MILITA ) under age.
Later in the year he enlisted into the Worcesters, this time without any problems!

My last post should have read ,for Pte.Perkins ,SWB Regulars not Militia.
He had an older brother with the Regiment. He gave his age on enlistment 27/4/1905 as 18 yrs. 3 months!

Hi Corona,
Sorry to be so dim but this just aint working for us ! Hours now . We put in Hampshire, then civil parish "Newport". That only comes up with 8 enumeration districts, no sign of a 17 anywhere. Help, please.

Mike,
I use Find my Past for searching the 1911 Census.I have tried on Ancestry and failed.
If you are trying on Ancestry I dont think its fully operational,in all respects, with regard to the 1911 Census, for the whole UK!
