9805 Pte William Peplow is shown in the GWG record as having died on 1/10/1916. He is buried at Poona, and served with B Company. His home was in Willenhall, Staffs., What was the 9th Battalion doing in India? Thanks

Hi,

The 9th Battalion were in Egypt and Mesopotamia in 1916. However, there were military hospitals in India used to treat the wounded and some died there of their wounds. I think the main Military Hospitals were around Bombay. It is likely he was wounded or taken ill and then transported to India on a hospital ship.

Hi Louis,
Thanks for the information. I suppose I should have realised that "died" would have meant from illness or disease.
Does anyone know which newspaper the residents of Willenhall, Staffs., might have read of his death in October 1916?
Thanks
Clive

I am also researching a Private of the 9th battalion - Private 241170, Charles Jackson of Broadway, Worcestershire, who died 18th October 1918 and is commemorated on Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial in India. Charles was initially with the 2/8 Battalion of the Worcesters.

Interestingly his CWGC record states that he was with the 7th battalion.

As the 9th battalion was in Turkey at the time can I presume that Charles was transferred to a hospital in India which is where he later died? I am also surprised that he does not have a grave.

Any comments on the above gratefully received.

Thanks,

Debbie
