Hi All

I am researching 21271 Pte Charles Styles, 3rd Battalion who was killed with my Great Uncle Lanc Sergt George Wiliam Hill on the 28th April 1916 at Vimy Ridge. I have been in contact with a member of his family but information is very scarce. His picture has recently been added to this website for those who are interested.

Any information would be appreciated.

Regards Allan

Hi Allan,
No service papers appear to have survived. His MIC record:-
Entered France 13/7/1915. Medals 1914-15 STAR ,WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS.
It shows Dof W but Soldiers Died has KIA.
I have also looked for pre WW1 papers with out any luck.
Regards,
corona

Allan,

Soldiers Died have Charles being born and enlisting in Birmingham so looked for possible birth dates. Found a Charles Styles born Birmingham March Q. 1895 so looked at 1911 census and found him living at 56 Northwood Street, Birmingham aged 16 and working (silversmith). His parents were John and Emily Styles and at this time they had 6 children, Charles being the second oldest. He had three brothers John 19, Edward 8 and William 2 and two sisters Frances 14 and Mabel 6.
Not sure this will be of any help but could be the Charles Styles you are seeking information on.

Other births for Birmingham, Charles Arthur Styles b. June Q. 1872 and Charles John Styles b. June Q. 1881 though I would think the above more probable.

Regards

Peter
