Hi, I'm trying to find out which Battalion my Grandfather (Cutherbert George Purchase) was with. I have his regiment number but do not know which Battalion this regiment served with in 1918 when he was injured.

Can anyone help?

I do hope so and thank you in advance.

Hi Linda,
No WW1 Pension/Service Papers appear to have survived for your G.Father so no luck there!
He has two MICs for some reason as they both are identical. No Battalion recorded.
His Silver War Badge records enlistment 5/9/1914 and discharge 8/3/1919.but no Battalion noted.
On his marriage certificate of 12th June 1917 he is a Sergt. in the Dorset Yeomanry at Wildness Camp, Seal, Kent.
I think his earlier army number was 861 before joining the Worcesters, some time after June 1917.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
corona.

Thanks Corona

We believe his records were destroyed in WW2 which is unfortunate. We know he was injured by machine gun fire in 1918 probably by friendly fire. Before 1918 we believe he was with the Dorset Yeomanry in Ireland. I guess I will be able to trace which Battalions of the Worcestershire Regiment were involved in WW1 in 1918 and then I should be able to trace which battlefields he saw action in.

Like so many, my Grandfather never talked of his ordeal. We have a lovely letter from his previous CO within the Dorset Yeomanry who took a personal interest in my Grandfather when he was shot. Thankfully he survived and I'm here as a result!
