Pte Walter Wilfred Cecil MITCHELL 35820 3rd Btn

im searching for any information regarding Walter Mitchell born 1897 who we believe was taken prisoner near Pronville in France but was later buried in January 1918 in the Southern Cemetery, Cologne, Germany. He served in the 3rd Btn.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Helen,
There appears to be some confusion as to the order of first names for Pte. Mitchell.
The the CWGC records WALTER WILFRED CECIL but all others e.g MIC,1911CENSUS, SOLDIERS DIED, has WILFRED as the lead first name.
There might also be an error in the mother's name ,with husband William, residing at 38 Church Rd. Horfield.
Various lists give the following information:-
35820 PTE WILFRED WALTER CECIL MITCHELL 3RD BATT. WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT Born and Enlisted in Bristol.
Also Date of Death is listed as 14/1/1918 as is KILLED IN ACTION on that date?

thanks Corona for the information. it is very confusing with his numerous names! His mother is officially Susan Mary but was always known as Florence. Don't ask me why!!!

Hi Helen, In his letter the volunteer researcher wrote "that there was an obvious discrepancy between the record of him being killed in action and his burial in Cologne. We speculate that he is the man who went missing during the reconaissance on the 14th January (1918) and was probably presumed dead. it is likely that he was in fact captured,probably wounded, and died after being transported back to Cologne as a prisoner"
The record for his birth is for Walter Wilfred C Mitchell

Hello Helen. The Roll of Honour in Stackes history of the Worcestershire Regiment in The Great war for The 3rd Battalion reads.....Mitchell, Wilfred Walter Cecil 35820.,Pte., F and F . Page 14/1/18........... Page 322 starts....Thenceforward for five weeks the Battalion remained in the line in front of Pronville or else in the support and reserve positions behind it. Little of importance occurred. On January 14th an attempted reconnaissance of the enemy's wire cost the reconnoitring party (b) a few caualties (c).
b.........Sent up from support position
c........ 5 wounded 1 missing
