Pte 9109 Charles Broughton

Postby peter » Sat Aug 18, 2012 10:03 am

Charles Broughton enlisted on 8 Jun 1914.
His 1914 enlistment form (on Ancestry) mentions some previous military service with the Lancastrian? Regiment (not clear) but gives no dates for this service. Any information regarding his previous service (if any) would be most appreciated. Maybe Corona can help on this?

Hi Corona,

Many thanks for the information, I have what remains of his service record (Ancestry) but no details of previous service.

Just one point if possible to clear up is his name, on all the details I have it just states Charles Broughton and that he was born Balsall Heath (Birmingham).

If his full name is Charles Edward Broughton the only birth that would fit (FreeBMD) Dec. Q. 1877 (Walsall). Time scale right but not the town/city.

I have not found him on 1901 census so I assume he must have been serving in S/Africa.

Peter,
The additional first name EDWARD comes from his original Militia Attestation Papers. As it appears on no other paper work, military or civilian,it must be an error.
As far as I can tell all other details, on his Militia and the two Regular Army Attestation Papers , appear to be correct.

Hi Corona,

Thanks for checking again. It looks like the March Q. 1876 birth details are the right one for Charles (the census for 1881 and 1891 would support this).
