Hi, Am looking for any information on my Grandfather Charles Samuel Wilde who went to France with the Worcestershire Regiment and then must have gone down through France to Greece and possibly been up to Macedonia. This is my assumption because we know he came back to the UK from Salonica on a ship called the 'Wandilla' which was I believe an Australian hospital ship, making it possible to do a bit of rescearch on Google.
Would like to find his record but do not know his rank or army number. He lived in Hallow Worcester and was a stalwart of the British Legion.
He was born 27th May 1877 died 15th November 1945
Please help in any way you can
Thanks

Hi Simon - Thanks for the superb reply, it has given me something to get my teeth into into !. Hope you dont mind if I ask further questions.
I am particularly interested in the campaign up from Greece. Because he sailed back from Salonica to the UK he could have been part of the 11th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in France that, because of events in the near east were moved from France to Macedonia via Marseilles, stopping at Alexandria for two days enroute. I got this from Google as part of a book on the 11th Battalion which is very well documented.
I want to tie him to these events. Question- How can I get his War Record ?

Bit hit and miss - 75% of the British WW1 army records were destroyed in the 1940 blitz - the survivors are in the National Archives in Kew, and are available digitally via ancestry.co.uk - I subscribe to ancestry and took the liberty of having a look, and I couldn't see them - there are quite a few Charles Wilde entries.

You might have a bit more luck asking the researchers at the regimental museum (link on main site) if they have any more details. Perversely, it's often harder to trace an individual who *survived* the war!!

Will continue to look.

Simon

Thanks again Simon. I remember he was in the British Legion Hallow Worcestershire (my birthplace) and have sent an email to them to see if they have his record, particularly his Army Number. Mind you it was 1942 when I saw him marching with the BL banner !!.

Simon for your interest, I emailed Shaun McCarthy of the Hallow British Legion and he said they do not hold central records for members prior to 1990. I will keep digging there might be some old ledgers somewhere.

Hi Simon. Is there any way I can find out how Harold James Wilde won the DCM, it is not on the war record that I looked up?
Thanks
