Good day to everyone...family research has bought me here and this my first post.

I am trying to discover whether 11170 Sgt. Jack Dench, 3rd Battn. Worcestershires, KIA 16 June 1915 has a grave. He has a memorial at Ypres (Menin Gate) but I wish to know if he has a grave also.

I would be grateful if I could also obtain all the details of his military history as I believe he was already a serving soldier when war was declared. His daughter Eva, who was only 2 when Jack died, herself died in Worcester in 2003 and my Wife is a direct descendent.

Many thanks,

Simon and Jackie Lawden

I'm afraid not - if the name is on a memorial, then there is no grave in existence which carries the name.

In the rare instances when an "unknown" grave is subsequently proved to contain an identifiable individual, the name is removed from the memorial at the first opportunity (maybe decades...)

Hello Simon
You can find a photo of Jacks name on the Menin Gate memorial ( if you haven,t already made the trip to see it) at findagrave.com.
If you,re researching family history you probably already know but at Wolverhamptonswar.FarmersShoes.com there exists a photo of Jack........In the last couple of years the government have given access to soldiers wills made at the front but a quick check doesn,t reveal one for Jack and it appears his sevice records were part of those destroyed during the blitz!
A copy of his medal index card may be available if you are a member of Ancestry..........
