Hello!
Does anyone out there have any knowledge of, or know the whereabouts of, the DCM won by my grandfather Frederick Sutton at Ghuleveldt in 1914. The full details of his exploit can be found on this website as well as an account of the battle generally believed to have been written by him.
I have never seen the medal and would very much like to know if it survives anywhere. I still have a gold (plated) watch that he 'relieved' from a German soldier (though whether dead or alive I don't know) either at this battle or a later one, possibly at Passchendael.
As a result of his heroic action, he got an upgrade and ended up as a Captain in the East Yorkshires. Since he was commissioned, all his papers, fortunately, ended up at the National Archives and I have seen these.
If anyone has any knowledge of his DCM, I would be delighted to hear of it.
Many thanks,
Duncan Mirylees Frederick Sutton's grandson.
