Hi
Could anyone give me any information on my Great Grandfather William Henry Phillips who served in the 5th Worcestershire regiment. I dont have his service number I only found out he was in the worcester regiment from the Berrows journal photo's at the history center. The family story was he was a prisoner of war in Germany for most of the war, but the picture I have from the Berrows Journal was from 11th December 1915 taken at a war station.
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian. I have found a Phillips, William in the National Roll of the Great War. I'm not sure if this is your man as he was guarding POW's not a POW. I have copied this infomation for you.

PHILLIPS W. Sergt Worcestershire Regiment

Re-enlisted in August 1914, he was retained for sometime on important work at home. He eventually landed at the Dardenells in July 1915, but after serving there for four months was invalided home suffering from dysentry. Upon recovery, he ws drafted to the Western Front, where he was immediatly sent forward into the firing line and took part in the strenuous fighting during the Somme offensive until he was wounded and again invalided home. Later, he returned to France and was employed at the Base guarding Prisoners of War until the cessation of hostilities. He was demobilised in June 1919.
Holding the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
59 Oxford Rd, Smethwich, Birmingham.

Hope it's your man.
Allan
