Postby jamajo » Sat Jul 21, 2007 12:15 pm

Hi all,
Im new to this forum but hope someone can help me with details about a William Dance. He was born in Court 4 West ST Helens in Abingdon Berkshire about 1896. On an Abingdon website it says he was a quartermaster sergeant and says CHRONOLGY from May 1916, Salonika and also STATUS returned. ANY HELP OR ADVISE WHERE TO GO FROM HERE WOULD BE GREAT.
Kind regards
Sue

Hello Sue,
Welcome to the Forum, I hope we can assist you. There were two William Dance's who are on the Worcestershire Regiment Medal Rolls. One wasWilliam G Dance 2383 , who was a private in the 1/8th Battalion. The second was William T Dance 34842 in the 11th battalion. How do you know your William was in the 11th Bn.? What else have you discovered about him, please? For instance have you got his Medal Index Card, service record or checked the absent voters list? If we know what you already have it saves the helpers here from wasting time.
Regards Mike

Hi Mike,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but as you probably know Abingdon has got severe flooding. Idont have anything else on William except his middle name was Thomas. His brother which we know about was Thomas William and he served in the royal berkshire regiment. We thought they might have been in the same regiment together. It was by accident i found William had been in the war and up to now have found nothing else on him. Be grateful for any advice

Hello Sue, Since we last spoke, the floods have got worse. I hope things are not to bad for you. You still did not say how you knew William was in the 11th Battalion. I have put a posting on the Forum on how to research a soldier. These are easy to follow and no real computer expertise is needed. If you get the results but need a little help understanding the military "lingo", come back to us. I have looked up William's Medal Index Card. He left the Worcestershire Regiment sometime in 1917. He went to the Labour Corps. This is a sign he was wounded and got a medical downgrading. This would Keep him out of the front line trenches.
