Hi Beardie

All I have on Private James Clewley is that he embarked for France on the 12th August 1914 and his MM Gazette date for 1st September 1916. However I now know thanks to you that he was wounded after Gheluvelt and have now put him down as being at Gheluvelt. Do you have any other information I could add to the list such as when he enlisted etc.

The database now consists of 1552 men who went to France with the 2nd Battalion between August and November 1914. Any information would be most appreciated that will help complete the list of Gheluvelt men.

Regards

Peter

Hi Beardie

Thank you for information on James Clewley. It must have been a very hard time for his wife with 5 children being informed that he was missing presumed dead. The letters you mentioned would no doubt make depressing reading for us today and only goes to show the sacrifices our Grandparents generation made, not just the men at the front but also the wives and parents at home.

Regards

Peter

When I first joined the forum I asked about a pte 7852 William Russell, 2nd btn. With help from the archives and the forum I learned that he was wounded before Gheluvelt, then served in Gallipoli, later discharged and reenlisted after the war.

I have just found that he served with the 9th batallion in Gallipoli, posting it in case it has any value for the records.

If you don't have access to Ancestry, I think I can be of help. A quick look shows, as far as I can see, that he was not at Gheluvelt as he was time expired, sent home in the beginning of september 1914, posted for a while to 5th battalion, and then back to 2nd in november 1914. KIA 1915 at Vermelles.

9271 Pte Thomas Robinson

Postby Andy Horton » Sun Aug 17, 2008 8:35 pm

men
I have recently aquired the 1914 trio and memorial plaque to the above soldier who was unfortunately killed in action on the 4th February 1917 with the 10th Btn.
Unfortunately his papers are not available on Ancestry (I live in hope) his mic states entry to France on the 28th August 1914 with 2nd Btn. I did not realise there was a draft to the 2nd Btn then, as I thought the 1st draft was in September

Can any member help me with any information on Pte Robinson or point me in the right direction, in which I would be very grateful.

Regards

Andy
