Morning Lars,
Thanks for your help and expertise. Masses of information, which I am trying to make a decision on. What is your feeling, please? Was he in the charge at Gheluvelt or not? Was it that he had lost contact with his old mates at the DCLI and got a "Favour" done by the Worcesters to sign his Clasp?
Best Regards Mike

My interpretation is that he served with the 1st DCLI in october & november 1914. There is nothing to indicate service with the Worcesters before his transfer in 1915, he is carried on the DCLI rolls before this. The only possibility I think would be if he was separated from his unit and found himself with the Worcesters for the Gheluvelt charge. It seems a very remote possibility to my mind, or what do you think?

Could the fact that his wound in action 21.10.1914 was noted in his file that followed him to the Worcesters be enough to issue his 1914-clasp?

I am with Lars on this.

Normally the parent regiment would have to confirm that a soldier was under fire to receive his clasp. However as his records state he was wounded on the 21st October 1914 that would be enough to confirm entitlement.

If he had joined the 2nd Btn on the charge I am sure someone at some stage would have noted 2nd Worcesters and others eg stragglers, or soldiers from different Regiments had taken part. As a lot of books of the battle of first Ypres inform us of the composite regiments that fought together after suffering very high casulaties.

Gut feeling not at Gheluvelt.
Thats my two penny worth, I am now going back on the fence.

Gheluvelt

Remembering the men of the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment who on this DATE 94 years ago (31st October 1914) made their famous charge at the battle of Gheluvelt (94 years to the day tomorrow). Also all the men from the other Regiments involved on that fateful day at Gheluvelt. We remember them.

Hi Steve,

Yes please that would be most appreciated. I don't have much information on CQMS Walter Thomas Smith other than he also served with the Bedfordshire Regiment.

Morning Steve,
I am absolutely positive that Peter will want the information on 8251 Bert Wanklin. Peter is really dedicated about this project and lists ALL information he can obtain on any man. If he does not reply soon I will fone him and make him aware of your good offer. We like the situation where we swop information. Which leads me to you Rick. In 2007 we asked you TWICE for information on 9960 Pte. J. Vaughan. No response. We asked again in 2008. No response. Now YOU want information on Pte. T. Black 7676. Guess what?

For anyone reading this post, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, if you come across any reference to Gheluvelt in October 1914 or any man involved in the action, LET US KNOW.
Regards Mike
