Peter. I think he may have been wounded as I have a letter from the Masonic Lodge, (he was master at one point), stating he was a Gheluvelt 'survivor'. The museum have his medals.
I have submitted an email via webmaster with details of Captain E G Williams. He was definitely there, listed twice on list, and I think I have filled in some gaps. I have his medals on the way.

Rich.

Still looking for Chantler medals.

Rich. Capt. Williams was at Gheluvelt and was wounded and taken prisoner. I would be interested to know what new information you may have.

Peter. He was previously Captain in Queens Own Royal West Surrey Regt. gaining QSA CC clasp & KSA 01-02. He was interned at Gutersloh and after repatriation in March 1918 transferred to RASC. I have a defence medal with group but haven't found out why as yet. He was a motor mechanic after the war I believe. New group to me so still digging. There was a photo of officers at Gutersloh submitted by his wife to a newspaper during war, it was taken by him, but I haven't been able to find this yet although I know it does exist.

David,

I have been checking Jones again after seeing your post. I don't have a great deal of information on him I'm sorry to say and can't say with any confidence that he was at Gheluvelt. However I have not found any information to say for certain he wasn't there (not that this helps you). His pension ledger information gives a birth year for 1884 and an address for Martley, Worcestershire but checking records I can only find a record for 1882 (Martley) so he may have falsified his age when enlisting (1903). Discharged 28.05.18, disabilities laryngitis, bronchitis. Sorry I can't give you a more positive reply.
Regards

Rich,

With Bateman nothing found for certain to say he was not at Gheluvelt however a wounded report for F. Bateman (1914) 'The Genealogist' might alter this. I don't have access to this site so don't know if this is the F. Bateman (we) need or gives a date that would eliminate him. I have not found a report to date for him as wounded so it may not be 9620 F. Bateman (so not 100%).

Peter,
Thank you.
Like you I came to the conclusion that he came from Martley, Worcestershire. At sometime he apparently resided at Cotteridge, Kings Norton, Worcestershire. He resided in Martley until he joined the Worcester's and is on the 2nd Battalion roll in India, on the 1911 census. Then he seems to disappear.
I could find no indication of him being ill, injuried, on leave or transferred before Gheluvelt so my assumption was that he was there.

David,

Looked for him on 1939 England & Wales register but nothing so maybe he had died before 1939. Possible death record March Q. 1936 Arnold E. Jones aged 56 Birmingham.

Peter,
Appreciate the time you have spent on this man. Dying in B'ham would tie in with his pension ledger which indicated in 1918 he resided in Kings Norton, but there is at least one other in the Midlands Census with the same name?
So I'll leave this challenge for another day.

David
