David,

Again without his service papers I can't be 100% certain he was at Gheluvelt but I would say I am 99% certain that he was WITH THE BATTALION (although note necessarily in the charge) ON THE DAY. The report of his wounding (reported from base 5th December) would suggest he was wounded mid to late November and with this in mind I believe he would have been with the battalion.

Peter,
Thank you, my guess was it points to him being there but as you say not definitive.

Peter,
Could SGT. ROBERT SMITH, 9577/263140 be at Gheluvelt please?
Went to France, 12 August, 1914 with the 2nd Battalion.
On the Worcester Cathedral nominal roll for the 2nd as a PTE.
Wounded around 3 October, 1916 as a CPL and served in the 2/8th Battalion before returning to the 2nd.
As yet found little else other than residing in Dover. He could have been with the 2nd as a cook in 1911 census?
Best regards,
David

David,

Sorry about the delay in answering your posting.
I can't give you anything positive regards Gheluvelt, I don't have enough information on him. The 1911 census Robert Smith you mention is serving with the 3rd Bn. (at this time) born Tipton Staffs. abt 1887. Another Robert Smith serving with the 3rd Bn. (1911 census) aged 19 born Bromsgrove. With a name like Smith not the easiest to research with little to go on.

I have the medals of 8390 Pte G Clevely 2/Worc on Star and 8390 A/Cpl G Cliveley on pair. He went to France 12/08/14 and is clearly the same man. Paperwork coming with the medals state present at Mons, Marne, Aisne, 1st Ypres and Gheluvelt. Can you confirm this?

Did the paperwork have any other information besides Pte. Clevely being present at Mons, Marne etc?

No, there is nothing to confirm he was there, just these old hand written notes. They state he was a reservist until 5th August when called back to the colours. They also mention he went to Aldershot and 2 ships he might have gone to France on, The Lake Michigan or the Herschel arriving Boulogne 14th August.

Again without his service papers I could not say 100% he was at Gheluvelt but I have not found any details (wounded reports 1914 etc.) to eliminate him. His service number would suggest he enlisted in 1904 (March?). He was in England (wounded/leave?) October 1917 (got married). Interestingly one of the witness signatories was another (Ex member having been discharged wounds, May 1916) 2nd Battalion soldier, Pte. 6684 T. W. Foat. Foat married the following year the sister of George's wife. George was born 1886 (so would have been about 18 when he enlisted).

Thanks Peter. I have accumulated numerous singles/groups to possible chargers but there is one more I am very interested in. Pte/Sjt 8351/9351 T E (Thomas Ernest) Eccleshall. 2nd Worc on star with clasp. Went to France 27th August. Gunshot wound in 1917. He was pre-war (18th July 1905), regular serving in India. I also hold his brothers QSA/KSA, pair, LSGC & special constab. group of 6 who was 4316 G F Eccleshall WO CL2.

With regards Eccleshall a number of pages from his service record have survived but the vital information required to help confirm he was at Gheluvelt has not (but I have not found any information to say he wasn't). Do you have the medals for Pte. 9960 J. Vaughan?

Peter.
Since last communication I have obtained ephemera (lots of it) relating to RSM W H Kirley. He went to France as Pte 11992 on 12/8/14. He was awarded MM. He later was numbered 5239295 RSM and discharged with LSGC in 1931. He was a mason and I have found evidence in his masonic paperwork that states 'survivor of Gheluvelt'. His lodge was the one attached to the Regt. (Glittering Star). I don't have his medals, I have been informed they may be with the museum, but I need to confirm this.

Hi Rich,

I have him down for Gheluvelt. Would be interested to know what information you have on him. Again no service papers. Any mention of him being wounded or sick 1914?

Peter. Information I have on W H Kirley. He joined 15/01/1910. No details of sickness but his discharge papers mention a gun shot wound. I don't know when this happened. Awarded MM with 4th Btn 9/10/1917. WO/Cl2 1/03/1927, WO/Cl1 26/11/1929. Spent 10 years in India, Alahabad. Very involved with Regt sports teams and also a mason. Married Dorothy Bayliss in 1931. She was the sister of 14547 William Bayliss KIA 5/07/1916 with 3rd Btn. His medals/plaque sold at auction recently. Kirley was discharged in 1935 time expired, not 1931.

Rich. Thanks for the information, pity it does not give a date when he was wounded but at least we know it was a GSW. He was back in England early November 14 and reported (newspaper report) to have rejoined 5th Bn. Feb. 15. Also wounded report Sept. 15 (4th Bn.) I have his discharge 1936? He died 22.5.1959 aged 65, Dorothy died 1991 aged 90.

Could it be he was wounded at Gheluvelt?
