I have just acquired a Mons Star to 8639 Pte C A New. He went to France with 2nd Battalion 12/9/14. He is on the 2nd Battalion medal roll for the star where it states 'no trace'. He transferred to the RAF where his other pair are on their roll. What are the chances of him being a charger and is there 'no trace' because of the transfer?
Thanks, Trick. (Still looking for Chantler Medals).

Insufficient information (to date) obtained to confirm that 8639 Charles Arthur New was involved in the charge at Gheluvelt. Who is Chantler? I have a Chandler (6521 F. Chandler) on my list but no Chantler.

Peter

Thanks for that.
1037 Pte R C Chantler was my grandfather. 1881 Pte J Chantler was his brother. Both served in South Africa.

Hello again! I am trying to find out if 13317 Harry L Challender was at Gheluvelt. He went to France 12/8/14 and has a Mons Trio with confirmed clasp and roses. He was later promoted to Sergeant and moved to the 11th Battalion I believe. Also 12928 Pte Thomas W Yates. Entitled to 14 trio with clasp & roses and SWB. Went to France the same date. He was discharged with wounds 21/11/17. Can you help?
Trick.

Peter,
WO Class 11 Edwin Ford, 7848, 2nd battalion is on the 2nd Battalion Worcester Cathedral Rolls, 12 august, 1914. He was a Sergt. at this time. He doesn't appear on the current Gheluvelt roll, though it hasn't been updated for a while. Do you know if he was excluded because of any particular reason? I believe he was transferred much later to the 3rd Battalion.
David

Peter,
Thomas Henry BELL, 8498, went to France on 12 September, 1914 with 2nd Battalion. Suffered frostbite to feet in January, 1915 whilst with the 2nd Battalion. Transferred to 4th Battalion after this date.
Do you know whether he was at Gheluvelt please?
He's not on the Cathedral Roll, but again I am aware that this is far from complete or correct.
Best wishes,
David

David,

Bell is not on the Cathedral roll because he embarked in September. The roll names only those who embarked for France in August (13/14).

I only have him as probably (at present) for Gheluvelt but have found no details/information to suggest he was not present. Interesting is that his wife remarried June Q. 1919 to a Frank H. Freeth. I believe him to be Pte. 8515 Frank Henry Freeth (2nd Bn.) who was discharged 1916 (sickness). There were two children from the marriage of Thomas and Charlotte (Thomas Henry and Charles).

Regards

Peter

Peter,

Was Pte GEORGE BLACKMAN, 11220, 2nd Battalion at Gheluvelt please?
Landed in France 12 August, 1914, wounded 19 November, 1914.
Convicted of desertion 3 December, 1915 though appears to have severed his punishment and later became a L/Cpl in Labour Corp.
Eventually discharged because of sickness.

David,
19th November was not the date when he was wounded but the date that his wounding was reported from base. It was reported in a Birmingham newspaper on 30th December 1914. I believe he would have been at Gheluvelt but without a positive date for his wounding this is not 100% certain and only my personal opinion. What is your interest in 2 Bn. 1914 Star Worcestershire Regiment men?

Peter,
Thank you for the information.
I collect and research any militaria to the Worcestershire Regiment. Members of my family have over the years served with this Regiment.
Best wishes,
David

Went to France on 26 August, 1914 and on the Cathedral 2nd Battalion nominal roll.
Identified as wounded 5 December, 1914.
Eventually invalided out on 31 march, 1916.
Any information much appreciated.
