Worcestershire Regiment

Hello,

I was very pleased to stumble upon your very good web site and forum, and was hoping a forum member might know something about these two Worcestershire Regt. Officer brothers killed at Gallipoli in 1915?

Here they are:

Capt. H. FIELD 4th Bn. Worcestershire Regt. Killed on August 06, 1915.
2/Lieut. C.D. FIELD 4th Bn. Worcestershire Regt. Killed on June 04, 1915.

2/Lt Cyril Decimus Field had previously been WIA at Polygon Wood near Ypres in October 1914 whilst serving with the 2nd Bn.

welcome to Louis Scully website and thank you for coming on. I have looked up the two men on the "Big one" the grand all Worcester Data-base. The two men are there but the usual code linking them as brothers is NOT . Their parents or next-of-kin did not return the forms to the War Office in the 1920's. The information on these forms would have given us lots more information about them, age, for example and would have linked them as brothers. It would be good if we can put the link in now. So how do you know they are brothers? Officers careers are well recorded, so I am sure you will get more information about them from someone on this Forum !

Cyril Decimus field was born in Clapham, London in the winter of 1895.

Howard Field was aslo born in Clapham, London in the winter of 1893.

Their parents were William Field (born 1853 at Portsea, Hants) and Kate Field (born 1852 at Portsea, Hants). William Field was a Draper and had a shop. The 1901 Census show they had 7 children - Details below:
Mary K. - born 1880 at Clapham, London
Bertram - born 1885 at Clapham, London
Arthur S. - born 1887 at Clapham, London
Gladys E. - born 1888 at Clapham, London
Octivia C. - born 1891 at Clapham, London
Howard - born 1893 at Clapham, London
Cyril - born 1895 at Clapham, London

Howard was a Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment and held the rank of Temporary Captain commanding 'X' Company in Gallipoli. He was killed in action on the 6th August 1915.

Cyril Decimus was a 2/Lieutenant intially with the 5th Battalion but transferred to the 4th Battalion on the 27th May 1915 with a group of reinforcements. He was killed a few days later on the 4th June 1915.

Hello Louis,
I eventually managed to find when each brother got their Commissions. Why Howard Field is missing from the July 1914 Army List I dont Know. I found a long write up on Cyril. He got his his Commission on the very day another brother was killed. The 3rd brother was not in the Worcesters. The write up confirms all you said about the family, dates, locations, the lot.

I’m so sorry to have not responded to all these wonderful posts. I’ve been going through a rough spell at work and my mind has sadly been in other places. My apologies for not thanking all of you sooner for kindly taking the time to contributed posts to this thread. All the above information is new to me, and tremendously helpful!

I have in my possession the medals, memorial plaques, memorial scrolls, and some other original material related to the three Field Brothers. I have found a copy photograph of Clifford Field RMLI, but sadly no photos of the Worcestershire brothers have been found to exist.

I would be happy to post photo’s of the collection on the forum if members were interested.
