Worcestershire Regiment

A photograph of 7 Gheluvelt survivors (1926) has one named C.Q.M.S. T.Adkins M.M. On checking Stackes' book for M.M. winners the only Adkins is 240150 L. Adkins. In the Worcester Regiment magazine 'Firm' an article dated January 1965 on Gheluvelt names the known survivors at that time and one W. Adkins M.M. is listed. Again referring to Stacke no W. Adkins is listed. Could it be that they are the same person but which initial is correct. But to confuse matters more in the index of Stackes' book we have a Sgt. W. Adkins who was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre (Belgian). So do we have two survivors from Gheluvelt named Adkins one being a M.M. winner be it T. OR L. Adkins and the other Adkins (W) his photo caption being wrong. Another survivor in the magazine article is one W.J. Denning M.M. Again refering to Stacke we have two Dennings' but no W.J. Two further survivors won the M.M., G.H. Chesterton + Bar (8846)? and SF Leigh (10064)? The last mentioned is on the photograph of the 7 Gheluvelt survivors dated 1926 which can be found on this site under Gheluvelt. None of the men won their award for action at Gheluvelt but I'm in the process of compiling a list of men who were at Gheluvelt on 31st October 1914 and any help would be appreciated.

william adkins mm is listed in the london gazette and stacke as ATKINS

same number 8983 and the london gazette states 2nd worcesters . so i think this is yer man

It was me who "edited" your posting. We must tell Louis Scully that there is a fault with the software. If anyone just uses the single letter "S" on its own, the software sticks a "Coy" with it. See what I mean ! If you use it with a full stop or slash it is just the same. s.s/.. It confuses the issue. Any how Beardie is right, my great Hero Captain Stacke (Of the Regiment) got it wrong. There is a W. Adkins but they put his medal under Atkins. Same number, same man. L. Atkins 240150 was Killed in action in 1917 and is buried as Quess What ? Leonard ?, Larry? Lawrence? No of course Harry ! Yes no joke he is on Tyne Cot as Harry Adkins!
Just to add more confusion, as you probably know , there is no Adkins or Atkins in the 2nd Battalion Star Roll or the Cathedral Roll. So you may need a miracle to complete your Gheluvelt List.

some person in the war office got it wrong!

his mm medal card has him as atkins, so the london gazette has him as atkins . i bet if you saw his mm it would have had atkins impressed on it! and his trio will have adkins!

Thanks for clearing up Mr. (8983) ADKINS. He was some soldier with a M.M., Croix de Guerre (Belgian) and a mention in Dspatches so after all he was three men in one. If I need a miracle to complete a listing for the men at Gheluvelt then I best start praying but I will give it my best shot.
Louis a good while back I sent you a photograph of three survivors from Gheluvelt, one being my Grandfather F.W. Tullett and at the time the other two unknown. I now believe that the other two men are, in the middle of the picture C.H. Stansbie and on the left J.H. Taylor. Both these gentlemen along with my Grandfather and six other veterans of Gheluvelt are pictured in an article on the 60th Anniversary of Gheluvelt in the Worcester Evening News 1st November 1974.
