Worcestershire Regiment

Hello Everybody.

I've just registered for the site so I thought that I'd briefly introduce myself. I joined after a recommendation from Lars in Sweden. I've been collecting military medals now for about 8 years and my main interest is the First World War. I spend a lot of time researching soldiers and I must say that this is the best Regimental site I have visited .

I have recently acquired a 1914 Star trio named to 8996 Pte E.Rowles Worcestershire Regt. I have checked the NA online search facility for his MIC using various spellings and number variations but can't find his card.
Please can anybody help?

Hello Richard,
I stand to be corrected but my knee-jerk reaction is that something is wrong with these medals ! I have several very extensive lists of Worcestershire Regiment soldiers. Each list is for different activities. Your man is not on any of them. There is hope though. Each Regimental Number in that sequence was issued three times and only two are accounted for in the Medal Index Cards. So far I have never come across a man completely missing from the MIC's. There is also the chance that one of the two registered 8996's is an alias for E. Rowles. You will have to get their MIC's out to check them. It does note such things at the top of the card. As you already know, the Worcesters do have two E. Rowles in the MIC. Both got Silver War Badges but the declared Regimental Numbers are too high for a 1914 Star man . So far I have spent 3 hours trying to resolve this one. So let me know if you make any progress.

Following on from Mike's reply, I have found a 8966 Pte E. Broderick, reported wounded on the 13 March 1915 and rejoined the 5th Battalion on the 30 April 1915.

Just to give you all an update - the medals arrived this morning and are 100 percent correct so I'll start to properly look into this one. If anything crops up I'll let you know.

Well, after much thought and digging around I've solved the mystery of 8996 Pte E.Rowles.

I took an educated guess and PlumPudding the MIC for 49383 Pte E Rowles and written on the top of his card is + 3 Worc Pte 8996.

Edward Rowles enlisted 19/8/1912 and was discharged 25/2/18. He was entitled to a 1914 Star Trio and SWB.

So Edward Rowles was a 3rd Worcesters man.

Chuffed to have found him - now I'm able to carry on with my research on Edward.
