Chevron Four Blue

Hi,
Could any give me any information on "CHEVRON FOUR BLUE", and "W STRIPES FOUR" which appears on my partners Grandfathers WW1 war sevice records.

Hi Cleever,

The 4 inverted blue chevron on the bottom of the right sleeve are Oversea Service Stripes. They were introduced on the 1st January 1918. The number of stripes indicate the number of years served overseas (but part of a year also cound as one - even 1 day). As he had 4 chevron that indicates he served between 4 years to 3 years 1 day overseas. If the first chevron was eraned before 31st December 1914 the colour would have been red.

If you are referring to 4 vertical whilte stripes on the cuff of the left arm - these were wound stripes (2 inch long). If he had 4 then he had been wounded 4 times.

Hi Louis,

All together he served over 14 years, enlisted 30/01/1905, discharged 10/03/1919. He disembarked at Alexandria 06/12/1915. Repatriated to England 13/12/1918, so that would fit. He was wounded 4 times.
