I have been researching my granfather's military records and his "pal" who was killed 22/11/15.
James oliver YEATES, Pte. 15662 M.M.
born in Elmston Hardwick, Cheltenham and his pal
James (Jim), Edward GROVES, Pte. 15656
born Shurdington, Gloucester, K.i.a. 22/11/1915, buried at le touret military cemetry. Jim is remembered on the war memorial at St. Marys church Priors Norton.
I remember my grandfather well visited the old battelfields in 1964 with him and have researched Jim in his memory. I have visited jims grave in France as well.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with anything about either of the two.
Thnks Mike

Mike
Not sure if you will get this.
Jim was my great uncle and is well rembered by the family. I was told he was a sniper but I am sure we did not have trained snipers this early in the war.
We were also told he was with his brother when he was shot.
Any information would be great

hi Matt,
It was great to hear from you. As stated in the post i entered i have visited Jim's grave twice ,once in 1964 with my familly and my grandfather who served with Jim.The other with my family a few years ago when we placed a poppy cross on Jim's grave.
Their army numbers were just two apart! and they signed up together.I remember my grandfather well. I can only tell you what i was told . My grandfather went to get some rations and Jim was brewing up.when he came back, he found Jim shot dead by a german sniper. He said that he went out to find the sniper and managed to get the blighter. A nice story but as i said i don't know if it was the whole truth or what? Iknow they were pals whether that was after they signed up or before i don't know. Does your family have Jim's medals and any photos?

Mike
I have to apologise I thought replies would flag up on e mail.
Great to here from you, I have just been on the phone to my aunt and was telling her about the forum. I logged in and heres your reply.
Please feel free to give me a call on 07770 846983 and I can tell you as much as I know
I am sure family were told a version of events that would make their loss as bearable as possible but your version sounds right to me. I am not sure that Jim was even with his bother at the time as I am sure this would have been remembered by your grandfather.
As a child I was always rather wary of a colourised large potrait of Jim in uniform before he left for the war. He looked like a boy in mans clothing.
Well it would be good to here from you.
Very best regards
Matt
