6416 Lance Corporal Ernest Harry Burton, KiA 31-10-1914

Postby Barrie » Sat Mar 08, 2008 2:30 pm

For information, 6416 Lance Corporal Ernest Harry Burton, 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, Killed in Action 31st October 1914, probably a charger at Gheluvelt, is listed on HM Prison Service Roll of Honour as a Warder at HM Prison Durham at the time he was recalled to the colours.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states Ernest was born and enlisted at Wolverhampton and the C.W.G.C Debt of Honour lists no next of kin, he has no known grave and is listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

If any one would like an electronic copy of HM Prison Service Rolls of Honour let me know and I will mail them one, Barrie

Hi Barrie,

Lance Corporal Ernest Harry Burton (6416) was at the Battle of Gheluvelt. He embarked with the 2nd Battalion on the 12th September 1914.

What format is your HM Prisons Roll of Honour in (i.e. is it a spreadsheet, database or a list in a word document)? Does it cover all HM Prisons in UK? How big is the file size?

Regards,

Louis

Hi Barrie

This is just the kind of information we need to help in our efforts to make a database of all the 2nd Battalion men who were at Gheluvelt. To date the database consists of 1550 men and we are in the process of eliminating those who were killed in action, died of wounds or were wounded before 31st October 1914. It will be a long haul but hopefully we can come up with a database that will give us a list of men from the 2nd Battalion who were at Gheluvelt on that historic day.

Does your information give a date when Ernest was recalled to the colours?

Regards

Peter

Hello Louis,

Thank you very much for confirming that Ernest was at Ghulevelt, I always thought he was.

The Roll of Honour is a Microsoft spreadsheet file and is 285KB, it is laid out and looks as near to the originals as I could make it and I have basically transcribed the information from originals that are displayed at HM Prison Birmingham. There are infact 3 rolls issued to each Prison for display, 2 after the Great War listing those Killed/Died and those who recieved honours and awards and 1 after the Second World War listing the same.

If you want a copy I can attach them to an e-mail?

Hi Peter,

Sorry but the rolls of honour don't give that information, I have seen Prison Commissioners staff journals issued during the Great War giving additional information about staff listed on the rolls but at this time I haven't seen an entry for Ernest but I am still looking when time allows.

Hi All

I have been looking through the Worcester Herald for Ernest and I have found the following information.

20th February 1915 - 6416 Lanc Cpl E. H. Burton. Reported wounded and admitted to the 2nd Eastern General Hospital, Brighton, 2nd January 1915.

17th April 1915 – 6416 Lanc Cpl E. Burton. Reported Wounded & Missing.

22nd May 1915 – 6416 Lance Cpl E. H. Burton, 2nd Battalion. Killed in Action, Previously reported Missing.

5th June 1915 – 6416 Lance Cpl E. H. Burton. 2nd Battalion, Killed in Action 31 October 1914.

All very confusing. I wonder what his family went through during this time & when did they learn the bitter truth?

Thank you Allan, thats really interesting. Could I ask where these local papers are kept and are they difficult to search? Barrie

Hi Barrie

The papers are on microfish at the Worcester History Centre in Trinity St Worcester. They are indexed in year order, so it can be very time consuming to check every weekly newspaper for the year, but it is very rewarding when you find the information you are looking for.

Hi Allen,

Thank you for the tip, I totally understand what you mean about it being rewarding when you do find something, I'll have to arrange a visit as there are a few relatives I'd like to look for.

Best Wishes
