Worcestershire Regiment

Has anyone else found a descrepancy in the information contained in Soldiers Died in the Great War, which has been carried across to the Roll of Honour in Captain Staacke's History?

I have just been looking up information about family members who were casualties in the Great War and noticed that Alfred William Eacock's regimental number is different on the Medal Index Cards and Rolls and the CWGC Register to that in SDGW, I doubt there is any chance of getting this entry changed at this late date but its worth remembering there are descrepancies because they could hamper any future searches.

Alfred William Eacock is my Maternal Grandfathers cousin so if any members have any information about him I would be grateful.

It is not too unusual for a wrong number to appear. In the Worcesters about 1% of the men have been buried with the wrong Number. I had spotted your relation and corrected it to 27471. It does of course raise doubts as to which number you check him out on. I have often wondered if the man involved (Now in the spirit world) would have cared. I think he would have. I am surprised Allan Parry has not answered your query, as his relative also has the wrong number on his memorial. I have to hold my hand up and say I too make mistakes. I try to keep them under the magic 1%.

I to make mistakes and sometimes over look the obvious so I can't be to critical, I've had Alfred William Eacock's details for the last 10 years or so and it wasn't until I was sending off some information about him to a website called Malvern Remembers on Friday that I noticed the descrepancy.

Sorry to come in late to you post , but I was upto my eyes in casualty lists.

I also have had the same problem with incorrect numbers. My Great Uncle 12631 Lanc Sergt George William Hill is recorded on the Worcestershire Regiments Role of Honour & SDGW as 21631. He is correctly numbered in the CWGC and on the Arras Memorial.

It caused me quite a problem to start with as the Regimental Archive were not able to help. I received extremely valuable help from Mick Jones on this forum who was able to confirm his correct number.

I have found from my research on other Lads that you do need to be flexible about the spelling of names and slight variations in numbers. I know what it is like after 3-4 hours typing names and numbers into a computer how easy it is for the finger to slip.

I’m pleased that you have the correct information now.

Thank you for the information about Albert William Eacock from the paper, you wouldn't know of any papers that may have a photograph? Its interesting they have him down as from Birmingham because I know he was from Malvern and always thought thats where he lived at the time of his enlistment but it maybe because he did enlist in Birmingham?

Alfred is the son of William Eacock & Alice Eacock nee' Allway, born at Wyche, Colwall, Hereford, 4th September 1889, he was 26 when he was killed. I know that at one time he lived in the same street in West Malvern as my Grand Dad and they were of a similar age, the church memorial he is listed on is at the top of this road.

Barrie. The paper usually has the word "enlt" next to the entry for enlisted, but again you must not take it for granted. My Great Uncle George lived in Birmingham but he is shown as Plymouth. This is were he joined the 3rd Battalion after recovering from his wounds at Gallipoli.

As for a photo (the Holy Grail) you could try looking in the Worcester History Centre in Trinity St Worcester. There was another weekly newspaper (Burrows) which also had a picture pull out which has a lot of photograph of Worcester Soldiers. These are in a book form for each year. If you know of any other places to look can you let me know as I do not have a photo of George. Good Luck
